WotC Erratas, Complete List

Since I had previously been adding new erratas as new posts, I’ll continue that trend and post here:

Feraligatr (Neo Genesis #5)

Riptide should deal 10 more damage for each Water Energy shuffled back into the deck. (This distinction is important because it causes Parasect’s Allergic Pollen to cap Feraligatr’s Riptide at 10 damage.)

The Clefable has not been fixed on here…just had a Clefable do 120 to me (Firestorm) for 1 energy. I reported the bug. Hopefully they fix it, for some reason I thought everything in this article was fixed but I guess not.

There are a few more mistranslations I would like to report… Base Set Charizard, Golbat Neo Revelation, Dark Ampharos, Dark Houndoom, and basically the entire Baby mechanic (this person really did their research) (There is also a potential Stantler Neo Revelation error, but it may be next to impossible to verify).

Mew (WBSP 47) errata will be released in the next version.

In order to fix Clefairy/Clefable Metronome, I need some clarifications in Copy Attacks vs Discard Energy Interactions.

Edit: Metronome was fixed & released too.

Figured I’d point it out specifically since it doesn’t get mentioned that much, but Focus Band should take effect upon HP becoming 0, before the standard checking for Knock Outs. Pretty sure this fact really only matters for Giovanni’s Machamp (you have to do focus band first, since Giovanni’s Machamp’s Fortitude happens when checking for Knock Outs). On the same line, Celebi’s (N3 3) Time Travel should have the same errata. (the focus band issue is on aqwsderft’s page, Celebi notably also has a 0 in the text on its Japanese card, just like focus band).

Can you clarify this? Are you relying on a direct translation or a different source?

so focus band is listed at

You can also note that the letters “HP” occur twice on the Japanese version, where are only mentioned once in english. Google Translate, which I would not trust on its own, agrees. Celebi has very similar text in the Japanese version, and includes mention of “HP” when it wouldn’t if it occured upon Knock Out. Giovanni’s Machamp, on the other hand, looks like you would expect.

I am the author of that blog, which is now deleted. I felt I was spending too much time on it. The posts are backed up via archive.org but I figure I can give the relevant points for TCGOne players;

  1. On later review, BS Charizard is not exactly mistranslated – if you had a chance to read another post I made on that blog, many Base–Rocket cards seem to have been ‘translated’ as if the cards had been written with Japan’s Gym-on language, which represented a major revision to how certain gameplay mechanics were articulated, so a lot of these translations have to be considered in a weirder context (though there are certainly still errors regardless, as many here well know). Charizard is a bit simpler of a case – rather than a direct translation of 1996 First Expansion Charizard, it’s a translation of the 1998 promotional print of the card, and is less egregiously wrong. There is still the technical quirk of how to consider the case of DCE that has been “Energy Burned” – e.g. does a DCE that has been “Burned” and subsequently moved to RO Charizard via its Gather Fire still count as Fire Energy? (For the TCG GB 2 video game, the answer is no. I have tested this myself.)

  2. The neo mistranslations with gameplay implications are valid;

  • N1JP Ariados and N3JP Golbat have the exact same text for their Poison Bite attack, and yet their English translations differ, so either N1EN Ariados is incorrect, or N3EN Golbat is incorrect.
  • Dark Ampharos’ Conductivity is mistranslated insofar as its conditions for deactivation. In my post I list some examples of examples where this results in incorrect gameplay for English players. (A 2001 WOTC ruling incorrectly doubled down on their mistranslation – as they did with quite a few of their mistranslations, especially closer to the end. e.g. outright lying about their translation of Metal Energy for Expedition)
  • As you mentioned, the thing with N3 Stantler is difficult to assess. I spoke with a JP player who plays the retro format and they did not know what the answer would be.
  1. As discussed in the Baby Pokémon post at length, WOTC attempted to rewrite the text of a number of cards to ensure that even though they changed how Baby Pokémon “count as Basic Pokémon”, cards that refer to Basic Pokémon and didn’t mean to also interact with Baby Pokémon would get this “(except Baby Pokémon)” line added to the text of the card so their rewrite wouldn’t cause any problems. Why on earth they went through all this effort to change the text of additional cards that never mentioned Baby Pokémon just because they wanted to add ‘Baby Pokémon counts as Basic Pokémon’ to the text of Babies is an interesting question. As far as gameplay implications, this is mostly theoretical, but it should be noted that even after WOTC “handed off” their license to PUSA, this meddling with text continued. I am not sure how popular the e-Card+EX format is for TCGOne players, but there is at least one meta-relevant card for the EX format that is effectively mistranslated; and at least one more that either is or isn’t mistranslated (much like the N1 Ariados and N3 Golbat situation above – if one is right, the other is necessarily wrong). I have decided to leave it as an exercise to those interested to determine the cards in question.

I was disappointed to see the blog disappear. I really appreciated your research and enthusiasm and enjoyed reading all of it. But I’m sure I speak for everyone here when I say I hope you’ll stick around a bit and help us figure out some of these trickier ones. Better yet, maybe you can even play with us, too!

More new erratas! These ones we always suspected were wrong, but they have been confirmed.

Dark Ampharos’s Conductivity should work even if you have more than 1 Dark Ampharos in play. The disclaimer text was originally intended to specify simply that you cannot apply more than 1 Conductivity Power each time your opponent attached an Energy card from their hand, even if you have more than 1 Dark Ampharos.

Additionally, Unown D/M/N should all function the same way, and I have edited their erratas above for these cards to include this.

Lt. Surge’s Electrode’s Shock Blast should only trigger from damage from an attack. This mistake was actually caught and acknowledged by Wizards during its era. This errata has already been implemented on TCG ONE, but had not been posted yet.

I also want to add that the process for discarding Energy with Blaine’s Charizard’s Roaring Flames attack is a little bit complicated when you have both single Fire Energy cards and double Fire Energy cards (like an Electrode).

Let me start first by recapping a few simple examples:

1. Blaine’s Charizard has 3 Fire Energy attached and uses Roaring Flames
Blaine’s Charizard would discard two of these Fire Energy to deal 60 damage (20+20+20).

2. Blaine’s Charizard has only Electrode attached
Blaine’s Charizard would discard this Electrode and deal 40 damage (20+20). Even though we discard two Fire Energt in this example, only Fire Energy not used to pay for the attack cost adds damage.

3. Blaine’s Charizard has only 2 Electrode attached
Blaine’s Charizard would discard both Electrodes and deal 80 damage (20+20+20+20).

4. Blaine’s Charizard has 1 Fire Energy and 1 Electrode attached
This is where things get tricky. Because Electrode must always be discarded, if you designate it as paying the attack cost, both it and the Fire Energy would be discarded, resulting in the attack doing 60 damage.

However, if you designate the Fire Energy as paying the attack cost, only the Electrode would be discarded, and you still end up with 60 damage.

In other words, whenever Blaine’s Charizard has both Electrode and regular Fire Energy (including cards like Rainbow Energy) attached, the player has can either opt to discard all of their Energy or they can choose to keep one Fire Energy and deal 20 damage less. Note that Ditto copying the attack with Double Colorless Energy would function the same way. However, the damage dealt will always be the same regardless of what is discarded.

It seems a bit confusing, but it’s very similar to paying retreat costs. Let’s say you want to retreat your Hitmonchan, which has a retreat cost of two. You can simply discard a Double Colorless Energy to retreat, but if you discard Fighting Energy first, you can then discard Double Colorless Energy, resulting in both Energies being discarded. How you designate the Energy in terms of the discard order determines what is discarded.

I thought we had posted both of these already, but one of the biggest and most significant mistranslations on WotC cards is on Magby’s Sputter and also Goop Gas Attack. Each of these effects are intended only to block Powers that were in play at the time of use. So if you ever benched a new Pokémon (or evolved one) after these effects were used, those Powers would still work. These two might be tricky to recode.

This is a case where I don’t forsee any major issues. You just add all of the affected Pokémon to a list on effect register, then only block the powers from Pokémon in that list.

These are all pretty trivial erratas, but since they have recently been implemented on to TCG ONE, I wanted to make sure everyone knew about them. All of these cards have an up to 2 clause that should simply be 2. You can always take 1 when there aren’t 2 available, but when there are 2 legal targets, you must choose 2:

Hi Jason! Why was Neo/old-back Energy Charge changed to remove “up to”? It seems like the Japanese Neo card has “up to”, which was removed for VS & Expedition… so the Neo Genesis one should still be “up to”. Unless there was some Japanese errata done to the N1 copy that was published somewhere…?

Japanese N1: エネルギーチャージ | ポケモンカードneo 第1弾 金、銀、新世界へ... “を最大2” => “up to 2”
Japanese VS: エネルギーチャージ | ポケモンカードVS ポケモンカード★VS(138/141)
Japanese Expedition: エネルギーチャージ | ポケモンカードe 第1弾基本拡張パック(051/128)

(insert usual “I don’t speak Japanese and can only use Google Translate” disclaimer here)

Pokémon Card Neo 1 Handy Book:

Card Text:

コインを投げて「おもて」なら、 あなたのトラッシュから「エネ ルギーカード」を最大2枚選び 出し、山札にもどす。その後、 その山札をよく切る。

Clarified Text:

コインを投げて「おもて」なら、あな たのトラッシュから 「エネルギーカー ド」を2枚選び出し、山札にもどす。そ の後、その山札をよく切る。

Ok, thank you! I thought it might be something like this. I knew about Official Card Book 2000 for Base-Gym; I’ll take a look at these other books also.

Two small updates:

Sabrina’s Gengar’s Dark Wave should operate the same as Goop Gas Attack & Sputter, meaning it only effects Pokémon in play at the time of use.

Leech Seed’s healing is compulsory when it deals damage, not optional. TCG ONE already has this set to automatically triggering, so there’s no change needed, but it is technically an error.

Some of the more trivial erratas covered in Japanese blogs above:

Exeggcute’s Leech Seed has the same errata as Bulbasaur’s; you must always heal if you deal damage.

Charity should return to it’s owner’s hand at the end of the opponent’s turn, not yours.

The effect of Negative Ion is on the Defending Pokémon, so benching or evolving Chinchou shouldn’t end the effect.

MAX Burst, like Jungle Exeggutor’s Big Eggsplosion, should count Energy, not Energy cards. (Also, Exeggutor is misspelled, lol.)

![image|363x500](upload://lXlryFiwTn63PXGlRcqruZTUzLj.jpeg
Armor Up should require the coin flip immediately, and if Heads the effect is on until the end of your turn.

Mass Explosion should apply Weakness & Resistance. The sentence saying not to was likely supposed to be italicized reminder next to not apply it for Benched Pokémon.

Baton Pass should move all Energy attached to Ledian to 1 of your Benched Grass Pokémon, if any.

Technically, Professor Elm, PokéGear & Time Capsule don’t allow you to play Trainers until the end of your opponent’s next turn. This matters only because of Chaos Gym; if your opponent fails to use one of these Trainers, and you opt to use it, you would still be prevented from using Trainers when your next turn began.

Rocket’s Secret Experiment does not allow the user to use Trainer cards until the end of their next turn. It is different from Professor Elm, PokéGear and Time Capsule in the sense that use applies to using the opponent’s failed Trainers through Chaos Gym.

Sketch should function like the proper Metronome and require you to still do anything else required to use the attack.

Both Unown A’s Anger and Unown X’s XXXXX Powers are optional Powers you can activate once per turn.
