[BR] Two observed, separate bugs with pokémon powers on Jungle set cards. Mr. Mime (JU 6 / JU 22) "Invisible Wall" and Venomoth (JU 13 / JU 29) "Shift"

Not sure if it’s relevant or not, but both of the following occurred in a career game and so I added the “career” tag. Maybe not the best place/time to ask, but is there any way to petition for new tags for forum topics?

The first presumed bug happened in a Base-Rocket game; Game ID: 6a458664fc3909652350749e .
I had a Mr. Mime(Jungle, forget which version in case it matters) in play, in the active position. It was poisoned from an earlier turn by an Ekans or Koffing (I think), but I had used an Alakazam (BS 1) to move its damage to another card. Then it was attacked by a Machamp (BS 8)’s Seismic Toss attack – which did the full 60 damage through Mr. Mime’s Invisible Wall pokémon power. Pretty sure it wasn’t affected by another status which would disable the Invisible Wall (e.g. Asleep/Confused/Paralyzed), and only was Poisoned. Plausibly, I wasn’t paying enough attention and it was… but I don’t think so. Still felt it was worth reporting in case it was how it seemed to me at the time. Opponent didn’t respond/acknowledge when I asked about it (maybe was a language barrier, idk) so I kinda just had to post here.

The second bug happened in a Base-Fossil game; Game ID: 6a458b2ffc390965235074ac .
There was a benched Venomoth in play (from Jungle, and again I was not paying attention to if it were the holo/normal version in case it matters). It had previously used its Shift pokémon power to change into Lightning and Fighting types earlier in the game, but may have been Switch’d to the bench after being paralyzed at some point. After I KO’d my opponent’s pokémon, it was selected for the active spot again. After my Pikachu(the only Lightning type pokémon in play) was KO’d, it was still able to use its Shift pokémon power to change into Lightning type to hit my Dodrio for weakness (double damage), even though no other Lightning type cards were in play at that time. It’s not the biggest issue, but it technically should only be able to Shift into card types in play at the time (aside from Colorless).

I think that’s about all I can share, because I forgot to bug report before leaving the game(s) again. Sorry.

Triage: Both scenarios are reproducible, but probably working as intended (mostly).

For the Mr. Mime situation:

  • If you were playing at a table in the year 2000, poison does not disable invisible wall. The card text does not list it.
  • If you are playing with a base-rocket card pool, but applying all compendium rulings that eventually apply to the card, then poison does disable invisible wall even though it doesn’t list it on the card.

I think the TCGOne policy leans towards the latter understanding based on what is in this other thread: WotC Erratas, Complete List - #10 by JasonKlaczynski

For Venomoth, the in-play check for shift only applies at the time the shift happens and is not cleared between bench/active (compendium rulings).

Quirk: when Venomoth changes to Lightning, it becomes a Lightning Pokémon in play. The card actually says “other Pokémon” though, so probably shouldn’t have its own type as an option. Through testing, it can be observed as an option to go L->L, so this effective no-op might actually be a bug.

Disclaimer: I’m not a judge or expert. This is from repro testing and rulings investigation.

This was interesting. Makes me wonder if it could be possible to surface all the compendium rulings that apply to a card in-game. (this would not be an easy thing to do)

Hey, thanks for explaining in such a detailed way and citing so many things ploober

  1. I wasn’t familiar with that information about Mr. Mime but I think that explains it pretty clearly and is likely exactly why that happened (even if it didn’t meet my previous expectations).

  2. For Venomoth, I didn’t think to re-check before I left the game but part of my concern was also that the opponent’s Venomoth may have also not been Lightning type at the time it used Shift (when my Pikachu was KO’d) to turn “into” Lightning type again. At one point it had been Fighting type to hit my Pikachu (WBSP 1), but I wasn’t sure if it ever went back to Lightning after I paralyzed it (I believe it may have returned to the bench with a Switch card to escape paralysis). I think the order of things was:

  • Venomoth Shifted to Fighting to hit my Pikachu
  • my Pikachu paralyzed the Venomoth
  • Venomoth was switched out
  • then some other Fighting type KO’d my Pikachu
  • my Dodrio KO’d that Fighting type back
  • then Venomoth returned to Shift and hit my Dodrio

…but I can’t really be sure as idk how to use Game IDs to review the order things happened, after the fact.

But overall, I think this is about as good of an answer/explanation as I can hope for? Would it be appropriate to click on the “[checkmark] Solution” button or should I leave that for someone else to do? (idk)
