Pluspower from Base Set is only increasing damage done to the opponent’s active, following english rulings from back in the time

Q. If I attach a PlusPower to my Electabuzz, use Thunderpunch and flip tails, does the attack do 40 to the opponent and 20 to me? What about if it damages to Bench Pokémon?

A. PlusPower only does 10 additional to the Defending Pokémon (August 17, 2000 WotC Chat Q59)

However, there’s a good number of wrong/weird rulings from back then, while the western version of the game was in control of Wizards of the Coast.

Just out of curiosity, do you happen to know of some japanese page that mentions pluspower increasing self damage in this print already? The Diamond & Pearl era print does include those damages, but it also makes a good number of things differently (such as being attachable to a Pokémon other than the active, plus applying before weakness & resistance instead of after as in the base set print)

For years, we have not been sure whether or not PlusPower should be increasing self-damage. The English translation taken literally seemed to indicate it would not increase self-damage, and Wizards also ruled it this way. I do remember when the Pokémon TCG game for GameBoy came out, PlusPower was increasing self-damage on it, which led to some confusion. It is great to have this clarified from a Japanese source once and for all.

@nobu, there are many other rulings for old formats that I would love to ask you about that perhaps you could help us with.

For example, would Rainbow Energy activate Suicune’s Poké-Body?
